Upcoming Meet the Quakers Event

Redding Friends Meeting is having a "Meet the Quakers" event on December 12th at 10:00 am in Room 10 at the Methodist Church in Redding at 1825 East Street. The public is invited.

This is an educational and experiential presentation on Quaker faith and practice. Topics will include Quaker Values, Quaker Faith in Action, an experience of Quaker worship, and personal insights and reflections of individual Quakers. Participants will develop a basic understanding of the Quaker faith and the contribution of Quakers in helping to create a more just and peaceful world. Refreshments will be served. The schedule is as follows:

Here are some photos of Redding Friends volunteering in the McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens last March. It's nice be a part of the care of this beautiful community garden.

There were endless leaves to rake to keep the garden beds clean.

Redding Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends

Fifth Month, May 9, 2010

In attendance: Ed Marek, Tom and Susie Morehouse, Doris Bond, Joanna Mooney

Approval of Minutes: We reviewed and approved the last month’s minutes.

Treasurer’s Report: Doris reported that the meeting has $2066.39. There are a few outstanding bills for the Whole Earth Festival

Ministry & Oversight: $75 was approved for a member to travel to Quarterly Meeting. Robert’s birthday will be celebrated at Dinner Among Friends at the Cooper’s on 6/4 at 6 pm.

Unity with Nature: PYM committee sent an email asking for items to display at PYM. We will send the poster that Kathleen made for the Whole Earth Festival with Doug. Strawberry Meeting has adopted a testimony on Earthcare, which we will discuss at the next dinner among friends. Ed report that our table for the Whole Earth Festival was in a good location and many people liked the $40 solar oven. Cookies were a draw, but not many took fliers. Peace & Social Order: Joanna presented some internet information about suicide rates in the military. More information is still needed. She will contact someone at the Redding VA clinic.

Interfaith Forum: Doris announced that Floating of Lanterns is on May 23 at 7:30pm. Park at Blood Source lot and walk across Park Marina to Pond area. Bring your chairs. Siks will serve dinner. We approved $20 for a Quaker lantern to be floated.

The First Christian Church is collecting Pennies for Peace to be donated to schools in Pakistan started by Greg Mortenson. Bring pennies to meeting both meetings before June 15th.

May is Mental Health Month. SCIF is still working to put together a network of care resource for local agencies. Doris will check to see if veterans mental health issues are addressed. We will review resource list this year, then add Quaker resources where needed in coming years.

Meet the Quakers: It was decided to postpone the Meet the Quaker event until September. A committee for this event was formed; Doug, Bonnie, Joanne.

Review & Approval of Minutes: minutes were reviewed and approved
Treasurer's Report: Balance is $2084. Rent is paid through December. There are $400 in donations scheduled still to go out, set by the Budget Committee, which meets every January. Unity with Nature has a donation request.

Peace & Social Order:

2) We now have a new family in the Faithworks apartment that we sponsor. The new family may still need a dresser. Doris will find out if this is still needed, and if so the meeting will purchase a used dresser for the apartment.

Interfaith Report:

SCIFF (Shasta County Interfaith Forum) held its first fall meeting:

1) We may be asked to help by providing cookies for the AIDS Day Celebration on December 1 at the Spiritual Enrichment Center.

2) The 3rd Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration will be held on Sunday November 23 at the LDS Stake Center on Churn Creek, with presentations by local faith leaders.

3) For the first three Sundays of October, the Sikh Center will be inviting local faith leaders to share a 15 minute presentation telling about their faith community and what it stands for. Doug will consider representing us.

4) At the SCIFF meeting flyers for many local events were shared. We are invited to submit flyers to SCIFF to be shared via their email list.

Unity with Nature:

1) There is an upcoming event at Ben Lomand Quaker Center, Walking Lightly on the Earth, weekend retreat, October 31-Nov. 2. http://www.quakercenter.org/

2) Our meeting should consider ideas for a group activity for Unity with Nature. Some ideas included a service activity or recycling education.

Old Business:

1) Doug will send out a reminder about September 17's midweek meeting.

2) Organization of our Quaker storage cabinet (books, etc.) is still pending. Doris will help with this, along with either Lorna or Susie.

3) Western Friends subscriptions: Doris will send in for three subscriptions, including one for the meeting.

4) AFSC Prison Presentation: Eric Moon will be available to do a presentation about the prison system and reform in February or March. Doug will request an outline of the presentation before we plan further.

5) Proposition 8 and other propositions: We will discuss these at our Oct. 3 Dinner Among Friends. Information from the Friends Committee on National Legislation ( http://www.fcnl.org) and the Friends Committee on Legislation of California (http://www.fclca.org) may be useful resources for Quakers considering upcoming ballot issues.

New Business:

1) The meeting will be sponsoring an Evening of Hope & Healing: Forgivness vs. the Death Penalty, featuring the songs of singer/songwriter Bess Klassen-Landis from the Hanover Friends Meeting in Vermont. The meeting will sponsor this event with a $100 budget and other support.

2) We have been invited to sponsor the AFSC Eyes Wide Open exhibit, which features a display of combat boots per each of our California troops killed in Iraq. Our meeting will consider this for possibly a project this spring. http://www.afsc.org/eyes/

Report from Pacific Yearly Meeting:
1) Doug brought back some books to donate to our library.

2) Eric Moon (AFSC) would like to visit Redding to present a program on the prison system and prison reform. Our preliminary plans for this event will be for the Redding Friends to sponsor the event, with co-sponsorship and donations from other groups. We could include this event in the Season of Nonviolence calendar (February or March)--entries are due by October 30. Doug will make initial contact with Eric and forward information to Doris.

Interfaith Report: No meetings until September (they will be 2nd Wednesdays at noon at the First Christian Church, led by Lynn Fritz). IWJP has disbanded and is a new subcommittee of SCIFF; they are working on the idea of an interfaith summer camp.

3) Treasurer's Report: Bills paid included $20 to Spiritual Enrichment Center (peace lantern), $50 to FCNL, $44 two phone bills, $25 PFLAG.
4) Ministry & Oversight:
5) Interfaith Report: The next meeting will not be until September. Mercy Hospital is having a grief workshop. The Spiritual Enrichment Center is putting on a green workshop in June--dates to follow.
6) Report from Quarterly Meeting: Doug reported that the Palo Alto meeting has some old books to give away and are proposing a regional library. There will be a trip for teens to El Salvador (July 13-18). The theme of this meeting was diversity among Quakers, resulting in a possible discussion question for our meeting, "What kind of Quaker are you?", such as theist vs. non-theist, activist vs. non-activist.
7) Other Business:
Midweek Meeting for Worship: Starting in September 2008, we will meet once a month for a midweek worship. This will be the 3rd Wednesday of each month 5:30 at the Bond home.
Beginning of Worship: To create an atmosphere of silence, we'll be designating the circle of chairs in our meeting room as a silent area. The other half of the room will be used for socializing prior to worship.
We will return to reading Queries once a month during silence. This will occur on the weeks that we have a business meeting. Ministry and Oversight will provide Queries from regional newsletters.
Clerical Recording:
-Lenore will create an updated document of member/attender names & addresses, starting with an email to all requesting updated information. She will also add a link to our website at the top of the minutes each month.
-We need to forward an updated list of members and attenders for the Quarterly Meeting Directory.

Mr. Douglass is a Catholic peace activist and author of a new book titled "JFK and the Unspeakable". The book is on the topic of the life and assassination of JFK and the relevance to the times we live in now. There is a lot of information about Jim Douglass and this book on the internet. 2. Redding Searchlight Religion Page: Doug has enjoyed writing responses for inclusion in this newspaper feature; Susie will write on occasion.
3. Doug will inquire whether 2008 Quaker history calendars are still available from the Berkeley meeting and order if available.
4. State of the meeting: We need to write this statement and for Quarterly meeting by May 9. To participate in drafting this document, you may attend a special meeting on April 27, to be shared and revised at the Dinner Among Friends (see calendar for times/dates).

Peace & Social Order:

Friends are reminded about the Walk for Peace (5th anniversary of Iraq invasion) on 3/16 at 1:00 pm in front of City Hall. Bring a picnic lunch at 12:00 to and meet on the front Cypress Ave. facing steps.

Ed will order documentary Prison Town USA which we will watch at a future dinner among Friends or we will hold a interfaith function to view it together.

Unity with Nature:

PYM Unity with Nature committee has asked meetings to report changes we have made to help slow global warming. Please email Ed at edatoakrun@frontiernet.net or bring input to the next business meeting. Ed reported that a Harmony with Earth Testimony has been proposed.

Ed encouraged Friends to look at the simple water heater design in the Sat. 3/8 Homes section of the Record Searchlight. There will be a credit given for installing a solar water heater. Ed is available if Friends want help with a design for their homes.

Redding Friends Quaker Meeting
Minutes for February 10, 2008

1. Review of Minutes:

2. Treasurer's Report:

-Current balance is $2770.

-The budget committee met to draft the 2008 budget. The meeting approved this budget. It includes funding for fixed ($1234) and variable ($450) operating expenses, as well as $1000 for charitable giving.

3. Ministry & Oversight:

-A committee met with Richard; in order to maintain ordination, necessary for his job as hospital chaplain, he will be applying for membership at First Baptist Church, but will maintain his membership with this meeting, as well.

4. Unity with Nature

-Ed shared low-energy LED nightlights, to help us in reducing our individual energy consumption.

-Ruah Swennerfelt & Louis Cox continue their Peace for Earth Walk, after traveling through Redding. Click here to view their travel blog online or sign up for email updates.

-We're reminded to continue in our individual efforts to reduce and save resources, especially through making small changes that add up.

5. Peace & Social Order:

There will be a peace rally and march in Redding on March 16, with multiple sponsors. Our meeting agreed to contribute $50 for the event. There will be a sign-making party on February 23 in preparation for this event. 3. Peace & Social Order (Doug)

The Peace for Earth walkers, Ruah and Louis, will be coming through Redding later this month. Our Meeting is hosting them, including a scheduled potluck dinner and public presentation, the evening of January 29th (see calendar for details).

Concerning the Record Searchlight request for letters in response to religious topics: we revisited this issue and decided as a Meeting to possibly respond to some of the weekly topics. Doug and Susie will be our official representatives to the Record Searchlight. They may work with others within the Meeting, responding not each week, but only when the subject is compelling, based on Quaker Faith & Practice. Tom will contact the Record Searchlight to designate our two official representatives

Doris brought mail from the past month, including multiple solicitations for donations. Some of those requests will be reviewed at the budget planning meeting.

Individual Level
Unplug or shutdown appliances when not in use.
1) Be careful to turn off lights in house when not in use
2) Less use of plastic
3) More efficient source of heat for the house
4) Avoid driving to the store to buy just a thing or two
5) Walk or ride a bicycle rather than driving your car
6) Turn down the thermostat by four degrees.
7) Install fluorescent lights in house
8) Drive highly fuel efficient cars
9) Take public transit such as buses or trains
10) Avoid airplanes as they are not efficient
11) Cancel a trip – ie. to Europe
12) Heat your water with solar energy
13) Generate electricity with solar or wind energy

Minutes for December 8, 2007

1. Review of Minutes:

Minutes were approved, with the note that minutes were also posted on our new website (reddingfriends.blogspot.com).

Correction to minutes: Doug will be traveling to Quarterly meeting on January 20, 2008.

2. Treasurer's Report (Doris)

a. Balance is $2772. Recent deposits include $1525 from the brunch that we hosted. Recent expenditures include food costs for the brunch, Quarterly meeting dues, a donation to AFSC (for migrant workers affected by the S. California fires), rent, and telephone bill.

b. Members are encouraged to contribute $200/year to cover operating costs, including PYM and Quarterly Meeting dues.

3. Ministry & Oversight
We discussed Christmas gifts for the Faithworks family that the meeting sponsors. These will be two $75 gift cards (Safeway and Target) for the family. Susie will arrange for these.

4. Peace & Social Order (Doug)

a. We'll be hosting the guests who are conducting the Walking in the Light, Peace for Earth Walk, on January 29. This will include a potluck dinner and presentation (see calendar for details).

b. Doug will be traveling to Quarterly Meeting on Jan. 20, 2008, and welcomes traveling companions.

c. Record Searchlight: Religious Faith Articles
The Record Searchlight is starting a new format for the religion section. Local congregations will be given a topic per week to write about. Articles will be published in the paper and/or online. As a group, we decided to wait and see how this works out before determining whether we will participate. (Doris will notify Lynn, who is coordinating this project).

5. Unity with Nature (Ed)

Lenore will post our 8/2007 minute on Unity with Nature to the new website, as well as the list of 20 suggestions for conserving environmental resources. Ed will email Lenore with additional information to be posted. Lenore will also create a chart that we can use within our individual households to track energy/resource use and to set goals for reducing our usage during 2008.

Redding Friends Quaker Meeting

Meeting for Business

1. The meeting opened with silence

2. Review of minutes (no comments)

3. Treasurer's report: Sue Morehouse reported that we raised about $1000 from the breakfast that we hosted at the Methodist church.

4. Ministry and Oversight: The meeting has submitted a letter supported Richard Coholan as a Quaker chaplain at Mercy hospital.

5. Peace & Social Order

a) Louis Cox and Ruah Swennerfelt, a Quaker couple from Vermont, will be coming through Redding as part of a Walking in the Light, Peace for Earth Walk. More information can be found at www.peaceforearth.org

The Redding Friends meeting will be hosting their visit. Doug will organize the event. Tom and Sue will host the guests. Events for everyone include:

Tuesday January 29

-6:00 p.m. Potluck dinner at Morehouse home

-7:30 Presentation at Methodist church, room 10

b) Doug Milhous will be traveling to Santa Rosa for the Quarterly Meeting on January 29. Doug will also be attending a workshop in Humboldt on Compassionate Listening. He welcomes company to join him on either trip.

6. Unity with Nature

Ed noted that at our next meeting he will have information to share from the Pacific Yearly Meeting on this topic.

7. Redding Friends Website: Lenore Frigo proposed that the Meeting have a website with basic information, such as schedule and announcements. The Meeting agreed that she should go ahead and set up a draft of this website. It will be posted at http://reddingfriends.blogspot.com/

Sunday, December 16, 6:00 p.m. Dinner Among Friends: Christmas Celebration with potluck dinner and gift exchange. Bring one gift of $10 or under, something handmade by yourself if possible!
